Home hair colouring is easier than you think but there are a few things you need to think about and the dont’s to do when deciding on colour choice for your hair.

Home colouring is good because it actually can save you money on some expensive salon treatments, however if you make mistakes with colouring it can become more expensive to fix than originally going to the salon to begin with to have it done.

Home colouring is good if your not wanting to go specifically lighter than the existing colour or dramatically wanting to change the existing colour you have, for many technical reasons. Hair colouring and colour choice is a little more than just waving a magical wand, which I find some clients expect a certain colour to be exactly whats on the box regardless of what colour they have existing in the hair. Which of course results in a trip to the salon to fix it.  Some tips are below.

  1. Choose a suitable colour that is around the same shade of lightness or a shade or so darker to be safe if your hair already has colour in it. Try to work with what colours and tones are already present in your hair now.
  2. Use the direction of the recommended colours for your hair on the back of the home colouring box as directed by the manufacturer you have purchased it from.
  3. Follow the instructions carefully, this includes application of the product, most times people put the colour through to the mid lengths and ends to soon, this will always result in the hair colour going darker  than the colour on the roots at the top which will be lighter.
  4. Ask for advice. When in doubt ask a professional for advice who has been trained in those colours. Retail hair care consultants are trained professionals, they should be able to give you the advice you are seeking about your hair concerns and products before purchasing.
  5. Avoid bleaching and bleaching agents, leave this to the professionals as these colours if used incoreectly can destroy the condition of your hair.
  6. Use good professional products to maintain the new colour. This includes a good shampoo, conditioner and treatment that is suitable for your hair. When my retail store is launched, have a look at the wide variety of professional products that are available.
